10 Questions You Should Ask Your Roofing Professional
Your roof protects your home—and your family—from the elements all year long. If you’re considering replacing it, or would simply like an estimate, you might consider asking your Seattle roofing professional a few questions:
- How long have you been in the roofing industry, particularly the Seattle roofing industry?
- On average, how many years of experience do your laborers have?
- Are you/is your company a member of the Better Business Bureau?
- Have you or your company won any awards? If so, what for?
- What was your most challenging roofing project, and what solutions did you find for it?
- Are you or is any of your staff LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified?
- May I see examples of your previous Seattle roofing or Woodinville roofing projects?
- Do you have any client reviews or testimonials I can read?
- Do you offer any sort of guarantee or warrantee?
- Do you offer a free estimate?
Answers to these questions will help you determine which roofing professional to trust with one of your most valuable investments.

The Skinny on Flat Roofs
With summer fast approaching, Seattle roofing professionals can expect an influx of inquiries from homeowners with flat roofs. Why? If you have a flat roof, you may have noticed that it becomes increasingly difficult to cool your house in the hot summer months. Flat roofs collect heat more than pitched roofs, which means that shingles are more in danger of becoming brittle or dry and your power and energy bills increase—a frustrating cycle. Larry Haight’s Residential Roofing Co. recommends considering the installation of a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) membrane manufactured by IB Roofing Systems. Benefits include increased comfort inside your home, with less expensive power bills, as well as flame-resistance and low-temperature flexibility—because what works in the summer should work just as well in the winter.

5 Tips for Cleaning Your Roof—The Right Way
- Sweep with a push broom. Start from the top and work your way down, pushing leaves, branches, and other debris in the direction of the shingles-never sideways or from the bottom up.
-
There is never a need for a garden hose. It may be tempting to "get the job done faster" with high water pressure, but it's not worth the risk of actually causing water damage to your roof.
-
Unblock keyways. Keyways are the gaps between shakes or shingles, in which smaller debris tends to get caught. Gently unblock them with a stiff brush.
-
Mold and mildew must go. If you have a wood roof, it may be tedious to scrape out the mold and mildew that can grow on and under the shingles. But neglecting it can be a costly mistake. Gently scrape out the offending growth with a dull knife, being careful not to damage the shingles.
-
Be careful. It should go unsaid, but approach any roof-cleaning project with care. Never hurry, and if you can't walk with normal footing, it may be worth calling a Seattle roofing professional to help.
Your Trees and Your Roof: Best Kept Apart
The same trees that make Seattle a beautiful place to live can pose a real threat to your roof. If branches overhang onto your roof, they could be depositing leaves, twigs, and other debris that can clog your gutters and damage your shingles. Additionally, rodents such as rats and mice can use those branches to find an entrance into your home. (Incidentally, a full-grown rat can generally squeeze into a hole the size of a quarter, while a full-grown mouse can push through a hole the size of a dime.) Larry Haight’s Residential Roofing Co. recommends keeping trees trimmed back from the roof to avoid compromising the integrity of your roof.

Roofing Experts Make Going Green Easier Than Ever
According to the U.S. Green Building Council, buildings in the U.S. account for:
- 36% of total energy use/65% of electricity consumption
- 30% of greenhouse gas emissions
- 30% of raw materials use
- 30% of waste output/136 million tons annually
- 12% of potable water consumption
Fortunately, green building—which aims to protect and improve the environment and lower operating costs in the long-run—is now so popular that it’s been said to be entering the mainstream. From Brad Pitt contributions in New Orleans to hit TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” green building is, indeed, becoming a new consumer consciousness.
What does green building have to do with roofing? Everything.
Roofing company Larry Haight’s Residential Roofing Co. proudly offers ENERGY STAR products—including skylights and roofing products—that protect the environment while saving customers money. One such product is the Solatube, or “miracle skylight,” which harnesses sunlight through a rooftop dome to naturally light any room. Larry Haight’s Residential Roofing Co. offers 10-inch and 14-inch Solatubes compatible with many other Seattle roofing products. The company has proudly served thousands of happy homeowners throughout Washington, including Redmond, Bellevue, Woodinville, Mill Creek, Sammamish, Issaquah, Seattle, Edmonds, Everett, Snohomish, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Mukilteo and the East Side.
Add Value to Your Home With a Strong Roof
In the midst of the housing slowdown that has hurt most of the country, it may seem like an odd time to think about adding value to your home. The fact is, however, that it might be the best time to do so—especially because Seattle’s market recently ranked as one of the three U.S. cities least affected by the slump.
According to Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home-price index, Seattle’s home prices fell by only 2.7% between February 2007 and February 2008. Compared to such cities as Las Vegas and Miami, whose home prices fell by 22.8% and 21.7% respectively, Seattle’s market seems downright promising. If you’re considering selling your home in the next several years, you might consider adding significant value by upgrading or replacing your roof.
Seattle roofing company Larry Haight’s Residential Roofing Company offers a variety of ways to enhance both your roof’s aesthetics and its efficacy—such as IB, or Insulated Blanket. IB features such highly advance technology as pre-formed flashings, which reduce job time and callbacks; self-cleaning gutters; high-reflective colors, which prevent moisture from seeping through roof membranes; hot air welded seams, which ensure a permanent watertight roof membrane; optimum fire resistance UL Class A-rated; and mechanical attachment coated edge metal. This option from the Woodinville roofing company is sure to protect and increase your most important investment—your home—for years to come.
The Dos and Don’ts of Do-It-Yourself Roof Inspections
The number one way to protect your roof from damage—and your pocketbook from pricey repairs—is to inspect your roof at least once a year. (With Seattle roofing conditions, every six months is advisable.) Rather than simply glancing around for obvious defects, you should know what and what not to do while inspecting your roof.
Don’t neglect your flashings. If these aluminum or galvanized steel pieces are deteriorating or oxidizing, seeping moisture can affect your home’s infrastructure and even the interior walls.
Do look for signs of dry rot or warping if you have wooden shakes or shingles. If more than one third of the roof shows signs of damage, it’s time to call in a professional.
Don’t try to “fold down” curling shingles. This is another big sign that your roof may need replacing.
Do check your gutters. If you see a material that looks like fine gravel collecting, it may be that your asphalt roof is aging and in need of attention.
Don’t attempt to inspect a steeply sloped roof on your own. Call a Seattle roofing professional, such as Larry Haight’s Residential Roofing Co., for assistance.
